Nonetheless, there are other problems than food access per se subsumed under the food security umbrella. The MENA population is becoming more heterogeneous in terms of what types of food it consumes. Table 7.2 offers a World Health Organization categorization applicable primarily to child malnutrition. The first category no doubt applies to parts of contemporary Syria and certainly much of Yemen. The impetus of the past several decades has been to work toward eliminating child malnutrition, which currently applies to some 33 million MENA children. More global warming is likely to expand the countries ensnared in long-term complex emergencies. For that matter, the entire region could be characterized as involved in a long-term complex emergency if temperatures rise sufficiently. Regardless, the clear expectation is that trends toward diminishing child malnutrition are likely to be reversed in the coming decades.
